OnlyFans messages, pay-per-view content and tips: how they work

How OnlyFans chat works for subscribers: direct messages, locked content priced by the creator, tips, what you see before paying, free versus paid profiles. · Updated 2026-10-10

On OnlyFans the feed is only half the product. The other half, and for many creators the bigger one, is the chat: direct messages, locked content you pay to open, and tips. This guide explains what you see, what you pay for and how to use it without surprises.

Direct messages

Every subscriber can write to the creator, and the creator can write to every subscriber. The chat looks like any messaging app: text, photos, videos, voice notes. There is no limit on how much you can write and no charge for writing.

Two things are worth knowing:

  • Many messages are sent to everyone. Creators can send one message to all their fans at once. The welcome message you receive a minute after subscribing, or the “good morning” with a preview, usually reaches hundreds of people. It is not personal, even if it reads that way.
  • Replies take time. A creator with thousands of fans cannot answer in real time, and many have help managing the inbox. Do not read silence as a refusal.

Locked content in chat (pay-per-view)

This is where most of the money moves. The creator sends a message with media attached and a price she set. You see:

  • a blurred or darkened preview;
  • the number of photos and videos, and the length of each video;
  • the text she wrote with it;
  • the price, between the minimum and maximum allowed by the platform.

Tap “unlock”, confirm, and the media opens in the chat. From then on it stays there for you, generally even after the subscription ends. What you cannot do is download it or share it: it is licensed to you for viewing on the platform, nothing more. Why that matters is in what OnlyFans leaks are.

The same mechanism exists on the feed: a locked post shows a preview and a price, and opens for everyone who pays. In chat the content is sent to you; on the feed it waits for you.

Tips

A tip is money sent with no content attached. You can tip on a post, in the chat or from the profile page, and you can add a short message. The platform caps the single tip. Tips are a way of saying thanks, of standing out in a busy inbox, or of paying for something you agreed with the creator beforehand.

Agreeing first is the point. “I’ll tip you if you send me X” is not how it works, because a tip buys nothing by itself. Ask, let her say yes and name the price, then pay the way she tells you: a tip, or a locked message she sends you. Always inside the platform.

Free profiles and paid profiles

The two models use the chat differently:

  • Free profile ($0). The feed shows open posts; the real catalogue is sold piece by piece through locked messages and locked posts. Chat is the shop.
  • Paid profile. The subscription includes the posts published as “included”; locked messages still exist, usually for longer or more specific content. The chat is the extra.

Neither is better by definition. A free profile lets you see her style before spending; a paid one often gives more for a fixed amount. The list of Italian creators with a $0 subscription is on the free profiles page, and the economics are in how much OnlyFans costs.

Reading a locked message before you pay

A few habits save money:

  • Length and count. A single thirty-second video at the top price is a bad deal; three minutes with several clips is a different matter.
  • The description. Creators who describe what is inside are easier to trust than those who only write “open me”.
  • Timing. A locked message that arrives one minute after you subscribe is a broadcast. Nobody is waiting for your answer.
  • Your budget. Decide a monthly figure before you open the chat, not after.

Things that are not normal

  • A request to pay through a link to another site, a wallet, a transfer or an app. The only payments are inside the profile.
  • Someone claiming to be the creator on Instagram or Telegram and offering “private content” by direct message. The real creator sells on OnlyFans.
  • A locked message that does not open after payment. That is a support case, not a bank dispute.

Chat is a conversation

The best use of the chat is the simplest one: tell the creator what you liked, ask what she publishes, be patient. It gets you better answers than any amount of unlocking. The rules of a good conversation, including how to ask for custom content, are in how to message a creator.

FAQ

Can I see what is inside a locked message before paying?

You see a blurred preview, the number of photos or videos, the length of each video, the text the creator wrote and the price. The media itself opens only after you pay.

Does unlocked content stay mine?

Yes, in that conversation. A locked message you paid for stays open in the chat, usually even after your subscription expires. It cannot be downloaded or shared outside the platform.

Does a tip entitle me to something?

No. A tip is a gift with no obligation attached. If you want something specific, agree it with the creator first and pay the way she indicates inside the platform.

Can I message a creator without subscribing?

No. You need to be subscribed, even to a free profile, to open a chat. Once subscribed, the chat is open in both directions.
