What does “referral” mean? Meaning and how it is used
Referral means a recommendation: on OnlyFans it is the programme through which anyone with an account invites a new creator to join the platform via a personal link and receives, for a limited time, a percentage of what she earns. It costs the invited creator nothing extra. It is rewarded word of mouth, applied to the creator economy.
Where the word comes from
Referral comes from the verb to refer, «to send on», «to direct to»: a referral is the act of sending someone to someone else, as when a family doctor refers a patient to a specialist. In marketing it became the name for organised word of mouth: one customer brings another and is rewarded for it. Referral programmes are everywhere, in online banks, delivery services and apps of every kind («invite a friend and get a bonus»). Creator platforms took over the scheme with one difference: here the reward is not a one-off voucher but a share of the invited person’s earnings, for a period set by the platform.
How it is used today (on social media and OnlyFans)
On OnlyFans every account has a referral link in its dashboard. When a new creator signs up through that link and starts earning, the person who invited her receives a percentage of her income for the period the programme allows; the invited creator pays nothing extra. Three kinds of people use it most: established creators who bring in friends and colleagues; agencies and managers who put the people they work with on the platform; and those who publish guides and tutorials for would-be creators and include their own link.
On social media a referral shows up as «I’ll help you open OnlyFans», «message me if you want to start», or as an «invite code». Two things are worth knowing. First, the referral is only about people who create content, not fans. A fan who subscribes to a profile through a link earns nobody anything extra and gets no discount. Second, whoever suggests you open a profile through their link has a financial interest in it, which is not wrong in itself, but it is good to know before deciding. Among Italian creators the scheme is common inside agencies and in small groups of friends who started out together.
Not to be confused with
- Shoutout: one creator promoting another on her own profile, often in exchange for the same favour or for a fee. No platform link and no share of earnings.
- Affiliate link: on other sites, the link through which a website or an influencer earns a commission on sales. Similar in shape, but aimed at customers, not creators.
- Fan discount code: it does not exist. The OnlyFans referral gives no discount to subscribers.
- Agency: an organisation that manages a creator’s profile for a percentage. It may use the referral, but it is a separate relationship.

FAQ
Is a referral useful to fans?
No, it does not concern them. The programme rewards whoever brings new creators to the platform; a fan subscribing to a profile gets no discount or benefit by using an invite link.
Does the invited creator earn less?
No. The inviter’s share comes out of the portion the platform keeps and does not reduce what the creator is owed. She keeps receiving her normal percentage of her own income.
How long does a referral last?
For a limited period, set by the platform’s rules and updated over time. The exact terms are in the account dashboard: read them there, because they can change.
