What does “Asian” mean? Meaning and how it is used

Updated 2026-10-10 · Also searched as: asian, east asian, asiatica

Asian, in the language of the platforms, means a creator whose origins are in East or Southeast Asia: China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and neighbouring countries. It is an origin label, used as a search keyword on social media and OnlyFans, and like every label of its kind it simplifies a great deal: a single word covers cultures, languages and histories that have little in common with one another.

Where the word comes from

«Asian» derives from Asia, the continent, and strictly speaking it should cover everyone from Turkey to Japan. In everyday usage, however, the meaning has narrowed. In the United States «Asian» almost always refers to people from East and Southeast Asia, while other terms are used for the Indian subcontinent; in the United Kingdom the opposite narrowing happened. Online the American reading prevailed, and Italian inherited it through its own word, «asiatica».

For decades Italians said «orientale», a word that now sounds dated and is best avoided when speaking about people: it comes from the European habit of describing «the Orient» as a distant, exotic place, and it carries that gaze with it. «Asiatica» is more neutral, though still a broad label.

How it is used today (on social media and OnlyFans)

On social media the word appears in hashtags and bios, often chosen by the creators themselves and paired with the family’s country: «Italian-Filipino», «Chinese, raised in Milan», «Korean in Rome». Many Asian creators in Italy are second generation, born or raised there, or arrived for study or work; Italian is their first language and their audience is Italian.

On OnlyFans «asian» is among the keywords fans search most. The platform’s own search is almost non-existent, so creators are found through social media, link-in-bio pages and directories like FanGuide, where labels help people find their way. A caveat applies here: it is a cataloguing term, useful for finding a profile, but reductive. A Japanese creator and a Filipino creator share the label, not the culture, the language or the style; and no origin label says anything about content, which may be soft and free or exclusive and reserved for subscribers.

The most respectful use of the word is the one the creators choose themselves: one piece of background among others, next to the city, the interests and the style, never the single trait that defines them.

Not to be confused with

  • Cosplay: an aesthetic inspired by Japanese anime, manga and video games, practised by creators of every background. A Japanese cultural reference says nothing about where a person comes from.
  • Latinas: an origin label for creators from Latin America. Same logic, different continent.
  • Oriental: an older word for the same thing, now discouraged for people in both English and Italian; still acceptable for rugs and cuisine.

FAQ

Is Asian the same as Oriental?

They point to the same people, but «Oriental» is dated and comes from a European view of an exotic «Orient». For people, «Asian» is better, and the actual country of origin is better still.

Are Asian creators in Italy foreigners?

Often not. Many are second generation, born or raised in Italy, or came for study or work. They speak Italian and address an Italian audience.

Is there an Asian category on FanGuide?

Not as a fixed category: the word is a broad and reductive origin label, lumping together very different cultures. In the site search you can look creators up by name, city or Instagram handle, or browse the ranking.
